Working under special governmental salvage permit, Peter Sachs embarked on an expedition to locate and salvage a vast quantity of silver specie carried by the stricken vessel in 1792.
After successfully locating the wreck near Tulear on the South West part of the island, the wreck site comprised of cannon and anchors (see photo left).
Only a handful of coins were found
bearing the dates that confirmed the identity of the wreck. Many of the local people were wearing silver bracelets like the ones seen in the photo (left).
Silver is one of the few commodities not mined on the island which would explain what happened to the almost ten tonnes carried on the ship when it foundered on the reef.
The team comprised of Gert Muller, Noel Geirke and Francis Jason (see photo above right).
